New Work Visa Options for International Graduates in New Zealand from 16 November 2026

Are you an international student finishing your studies in New Zealand? From 16 November 2026, new immigration changes will introduce a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and expand eligibility for the Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV).
Here’s what you need to know.
1. New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
This new visa may help graduates who do not qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa gain work experience in New Zealand.
Key features:
Up to 6 months of open work rights.
At least NZD $5,000 in available funds.
Available to eligible graduates with Level 5–7 qualifications who studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.
Applications must be made within three months of your student visa expiring.
You cannot use this visa to support a partner's work visa or a dependent child's student visa.
This visa cannot be extended and is generally available only once.
2. Expanded Post-Study Work Visa Eligibility
From 16 November 2026, some graduates completing a Level 7 Graduate Diploma may also qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa.
You may be eligible if you:
Complete your Graduate Diploma through full-time study in New Zealand.
Hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas.
Meet Immigration New Zealand's other requirements.
Eligible graduates may receive up to one year of work rights, depending on their circumstances.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Your options depend on your qualification, study history and previous visas. If you do not qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa, the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa may provide another opportunity to gain New Zealand work experience.
