New Pathway Student Visa Changes in New Zealand from 20 July 2026

New Zealand has introduced changes to the Pathway Student Visa (PSV) to give international students more flexibility when planning their education.
The changes took effect on 20 July 2026. Here is what students and families need to know.
What Has Changed?
1. More flexibility for Year 12 and 13 students
Students planning to move from secondary school to tertiary education can change their field of study without applying for a new student visa, provided they meet the visa conditions and obtain their education provider's approval.
2. More study pathway options
Eligible students can now follow study pathways involving NZQCF Levels 1–4, including English-language courses, foundation programmes and vocational certificates.
3. More time for English-language study
Some first-time Pathway Student Visa holders progressing to NZQCF Levels 1–8 can study English for up to 30 weeks, increased from the previous 20-week limit.
What Is a Pathway Student Visa?
The Pathway Student Visa allows eligible international students to study up to three consecutive courses on one visa, provided they have an approved study pathway.
Depending on their visa conditions, students may also be able to work part-time for up to 25 hours a week and full-time during scheduled holidays.
Students must continue to meet the visa requirements, including attendance, academic progress, financial support and genuine study intentions.
What Should Students Do Next?
If you are planning to study in New Zealand, check whether your intended courses and education providers qualify for a Pathway Student Visa.
